Susan Miller Briggs

Senior Surgeon, Massachusetts General Hospital | Associate Professor of Surgery, Harvard Medical School

Professor Susan Miller Briggs is an internationally recognized leader in trauma surgery, disaster medicine, and global surgical education. A Senior Surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Associate Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School, she also holds the distinguished Susan Miller Briggs, MD, MPH / Kletjian Family Endowed Chair in Global Surgery.

Professor Briggs is widely known for founding and directing the International Trauma and Disaster Institute at MGH, a global center of excellence dedicated to trauma training, disaster preparedness, and international surgical capacity-building. She has led major American College of Surgeons trauma education programs—including ATLS, ATOM, ASSET, and ADMR—helping to train thousands of surgeons and emergency responders worldwide.

A veteran global disaster responder, she has served as Team Commander and Senior Medical Officer for the U.S. National Disaster Medical System, deploying to crises such as the World Trade Center attacks, earthquakes in Iran, Haiti, and Armenia, and multiple COVID-19 national response operations.

With more than four decades of teaching, research, humanitarian service, and international consulting, Professor Briggs continues to shape global surgery, strengthen health systems, and mentor the next generation of surgical leaders.
